The Timeline is located at the bottom of the screen. It displays the caption blocks in the Subtitle Table as boxes which are aligned with the timings on the media. The Timeline and Subtitle Table are used simultaneously to help you visualise and time your captions. You can use both the mouse and keyboard controls to edit captions in the Timeline.
Understanding the Timeline
The Timeline contains useful information that helps you create captions and improve the accuracy of your captioning.
- The red line marker indicates on the Timeline the part in your media that you are currently playing in the Video Player. In the example below, the media is about halfway through a caption block that begins ‘The six month…’.
- The numbers at the top of the Timeline tell you where you are in the media, in increments of one second. Here, you can get a visual indication of what point in the media you’re currently at, and how your text is synced accordingly. You can zoom in and out on the timeline by hovering over the timeline and using Ctrl+scroll on your mouse. In the example below, you can see above that the media is playing from 00:00:05:07 (five seconds and seven frames).
- The numbers on each block tell you where the caption is in the sequence and on the Subtitle Table, as well as exact timecodes for each start time and end time. In the example, captions #1, #2 and #3 are shown, next to each caption’s start and end times.
Editing captions with the mouse
To move a caption block in the Timeline with your mouse, navigate your cursor to the middle of the block and click, hold, and drag. This moves the entire block, changing the time that the caption block will play.
To change the start time of a caption block, or when the caption will begin displaying, navigate your cursor to the edge of the caption block on the left. Click, hold and drag to change the start time and duration of the block.
To change the end time of a caption block, or when the caption will finish displaying, navigate your cursor to the edge of the caption block on the right. Click, hold and drag to change to change the end time and duration of the block.
Editing captions with hotkeys
Caption blocks on the Timeline can also be timed using your keyboard. Simply play the media and use the hotkeys to set start and end times. See Timing captions for further information.
