What do I do if my task media has captions on the screen?

Sometimes media is uploaded to Community Portal that contains open captions – these are captions that have been fixed onto the media itself. It can be a bit confusing knowing what to do when you get a task like this because… well, the content has already been transcribed! So, what should you do if you have a task with open captions?

You should transcribe all audible content for a task. As a general rule, if a task contains open captions, please transcribe those sections too.

An exception may be when the entirety of the task media has open captions. If you’re ever working on a task like this, please report a problem and select Problem Type “Poor Materials”. Online Support can look into whether transcribing is required for the task and we will be in touch.

It is important to know that open captions are not always accurate. Some open captions are automatically generated or come from live-captioning sessions so they may not always meet the task’s quality profile. Make sure that you always transcribe what you are hearing rather than copying the open captions.
