Stenocaptioning is a technique that produces captions and transcripts through the use of shorthand techniques, via a stenotype machine. Captioners who use stenography are called stenographers or stenocaptioners.
In order to create captions, a stenographer will listen to an audio source (for example, a recorded video or a live event via telephone connection) and type their shorthand commands on their stenotype machine. These shorthand commands correspond to the words and sounds that they hear.
The stenotype machine is linked to a computer that receives the captioned words in real time and broadcasts them to viewers as captions, which are visible on screen.
